Wednesday, February 24th, Mardi Gras Casino & Resort hosted the 2011 March of Dimes Kickoff for March for Babies. Each year, the March of Dimes hosts a walk to take on the most serious and growing problem facing our babies – premature birth. One in eight babies in the United States is born premature. The 2011 March for Babies will take place May 14th at the Capitol Complex at 11:00 a.m.
The crowd consisted of participants from area walking teams such as K-Mart, BB&T, Charleston Mothers of Twins Club, United Bank, Alpha Natural Resources and Team Motherhood. General Manager of Mardi Gras Casino & Resort, Bob Lagg, was on-hand to present a $10,000 check to March of Dimes.
The evening was a good balance of heart-touching stories from families that have been affected by premature birth and fun for the children of those families. One parent shared the touching poem by Emily Perl Kingsley, “Welcome to Holland” which helps describe the experience of childbirth turning out differently than expected. While parents shared their stories, the kids decorated and enjoyed cupcakes and cookies with volunteers from March of Dimes.
You can join the March of Dimes in raising money and participating in the March for Babies. All money raised goes to fund lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at helping women and babies in communities across West Virginia and throughout the country.

- Set your dollar goal: Aim high! Many walkers raise $200 to $300 – some more than $1,000
- Invite people to walk with you: Together you’ll raise more money and share a meaningful experience
- Ask for donations: Send out emails and use your Facebook status to ask people to support your walk with an easy and secure online gift.
- Lace up your shoes: Get out there on March for Babies day, May 14th. With every step you take, you’re helping babies!
