How to Play Blackjack

The main objective in the game of Blackjack is to beat the dealer without going over 21. Two cards are dealt to each player as well as the dealer. The Jack, Queen and King count as ten, the Ace counts as 1 or 11 and all other cards count as their face value.

Exceeding 21 is a "break", which is an automatic loss. Depending on the total of your original cards, you can "stand" (draw no more cards) or take a "hit" (draw one or more cards one at a time until your desired card count). If your total count is 21 or less and the point count of the dealer is in excess of 21, you win and the payout odds are 1-1. If your hand and the dealer's hand both total under 21, but your total count is higher, you win and the payout odds are 1-1. If you "break," you lose, even if the dealer breaks. If your count is the same as the dealer's, it is a standoff or "push." If you have a 3 or more cards 21 (Blackjack) and the dealer has a 2 cards 21, you lose. If you achieve a score of 21 (Blackjack) in two cards and the dealer achieves a score of 21 in more than two cards, you win.

The dealer must draw to 16 and stand on 17. In Blackjack, everyone plays against the dealer's hand. The dealer will deal each player two cards face up from the dealing shoe. The dealer's hand is dealt one card up and one card down, which is called the "hole" card. The dealer must not look at the hole card until all cards have been dealt and all players' hands have been acted upon.

If the first two cards dealt to you or the dealer are an Ace and any 10, Jack, Queen or King, the hand is a Blackjack. In the instance of a Blackjack and, if the first face up card of the dealer's is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, the dealer will call it as a Blackjack and pay at odds of 3-2 and will remove your cards before any other players receive their third card.

If the dealer's first face up card is a 10, Jack, Queen, King or Ace and you have a Blackjack, the dealer will call it as a Blackjack, but will not make payment or remove any cards until all other cards are dealt to the other players and the dealer receives his second card. If the dealer's second card does not give him a Blackjack, your Blackjack will be paid at 3-2 odds. However, if the dealer's second card gives him a Blackjack, your Blackjack hand will be a push.

INSURANCE WAGER

If the first card dealt to the dealer is an Ace, you may make an insurance wager, which wins if the dealer's second card is a 10, Jack, Queen or King and loses if the second card of the dealer is an Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Up to half of the original wager may be bet as an insurance wager after the second card is dealt and before any other cards are dealt.

Insurance wagers that win will be paid at 2-1 odds.

DOUBLING DOWN

You can double down on any two cards or the first two of any split pair except in the instance of a Blackjack or a count of 21 with two cards. You must make another wager that does not exceed the amount of your original wager. Only one card is dealt to the hand.

SPLITTING PAIRS

You can split two cards of the same value by wagering on the second hand that is formed in an amount equal to your original wager. If the third card is the same value, you can split one more time to make a third hand. Only one card will be dealt to each Ace of a split pair.
